June 27, 2023 - July 12, 2023
WAKO Canada is excited to announce that we will be taking a select National Team to an international team event in South Africa in 2023! We have taken over a dozen teams to South Africa for international events over many years. Each individual that has ever attending a SA vs CDN event has said it was a trip of a life-time.
WAKO-South Africa takes great pride of every National team that travels to their country. The association hosts our team so that we get a great exposure to the beauty and cultural richness of their country. They are currently finalizing a tourism program that will be part of the competition that will include the following amazing excursions –
- Tour of Robyn Island (where Nelson Mandela was detained)
- Hike of Table Mountain
- Tour of a Pelican Reserve
- Drive across the southern coast of Africa
- Beach excursion
- Tour of Townships to visit development programs
Perhaps the most amazing part of the trip is the organization of a Game Park Safari where our team will stay in a reserve and take a guided tour in the bush to see the big 5!
Every day the South African Association also take the team on local tours of African markets and sights along their garden route.
Our National Team will also participate in two competitions held on the two weekends so that athletes get a great chance to gain valuable competition experience.
WAKO Canada will be selecting a team of athletes in both Tatami and Ring disciplines. Applicants can be cadets, junior, intermediate, senior and veterans – both Novice and Open Class. WAKO-South Africa will match athletes according to bout experience for one of the events. The second event will be an open tournament.
As this is a select team event only a limited number of athletes will be selected. There will be two mandatory camps –
January 28-29 & May 6-7 2023 – both camps will be held at the WAKO National Training Center in Burlington, ON. Athletes from Ontario and Quebec must attend both camps. Athletes from other provinces must attend the first camp and a second regional camp will be arranged.
WAKO Canada will also have every athlete follow a newly developed Olympic Training program that is being adopted by our association to prepare for our future Olympic athletes. The camps will use the program and athletes will work alongside their club coaches to fulfill the training requirements. This includes goal setting, using specific training journals and also using our sport-psychology initiative. The camps alone will be incredible training sessions as they have been designed by Olympic Coaches.
All applying athletes are required to participate in the National Championships in either Niagara Falls (March 31-April 2) for Ring Sport and Kick Light or Quebec (April 28) for Point, Light Contact or Forms/Weapons.
A very limited number of tourist spots will be available. An information session will be held at the end of the camp on January 29th. More information will be emailed to clubs and posted on the WAKO Canada website shortly.
